Abstract/Contents: | "Urea-form fertilizers are a new source of nitrogen particularly adapted to the culture of turfgrass and ornamental plants. Chemically, urea-form is made up primarily of methylene ureas ranging from small readily soluble molecules to long-chain insoluble molecules. Urea-formaldehyde reaction products can vary in agronomic value from products having little or no fertilizer value to high quality materials which exhibit an almost ideal nitrogen availability pattern. The commercial manufacture of high quality urea-form is highly complex in nature and requires critical process control. The breakdown of methylene ureas is brought about by the nitrogen conversion factors normally present in the soil. The rate of release of this nitrogen is dependent on the soil and climatic factors which regulate plant growth, thus coordinating the release of nitrogen in urea-form with plant requirements for this element. Urea-form contains 38 per cent nitrogen and has excellent physical properties which afford efficiency in application. Most important, it exhibits controlled availability of nitrogen to plants, and is therefore of great usefulness to growers of turf-grasses and ornamental plants both of which are characterized by a steady and prolonged period of nitrogen demand." |
