| Abstract/Contents: | "From available germplasm or raw material to turfgrass cultivar there is a long pathway, along which many specialists have to contribute to satisfy user's needs. The final product of turfgrass breeding will be grown in a very large array of utilizations (for example in different mixtures) and environmental conditions (for example at different maintenance levels under different climates). According to countries and regions the relative economical importance of traits is highly variable. A selection index, which can describe a given cultivar in specific conditions by an overall value, is a breeding tool which also contributes to a better knowledge of improved material. This index will make turf breeders and users able to define cultivars or advance selections in terms of adaptation to their objectives and their needs at any given time. Undoubtedly this index will lead to a common language for all intervening people along the turfgrass germplasm - cultivar pathway. Indeed, this index has yet to be scientifically and experimentally set up." |
