| Abstract/Contents: | "The function of sports turf is to provide a surface for play, therefore playing quality is of great importance. It is necessary to make quantitative measurements of playing quality to provide an objective basis for studies of different playing surfaces. Examples are taken from experiments on the effects of rootzone construction and fertilizer on the playing quality of turf for football in which ball bounce resilience, rolling resistance, traction and hardness were studied. Future prospects of research on playing quality incorporating a materials science approach are considered and the relation between playing quality and overall performance of turf are discussed." |
