Abstract/Contents:"Annual weed control in turf is difficult in tropical and subtropical regions because of year-long growing seasons. Preemergence herbicides are ineffective because all growth stages are present and seed germination occurs throughout the year. Postemergence herbicides may control existing weeds, but they are soon replaced by germinating seeds. We conducted field and greenhouse experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of combinations of monosodium methane arsonate (MSMA) and s-triazine herbicides for controlling goosegrass (Eleusine indica L.) in Hawaii. Excellent goosegrass control was obtained when s-triazine herbicides were used, followed by two or three applications of MSMA. Three applications of MSMA alone was ineffective in controlling mature goosegrass. No phytotoxicity was observed from any herbicide treatment on common bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon L.). 'Tifgreen' bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon X C. transvaalensis Burt-Davy) was discolored by all herbicide treatmsnts; however, the injury was of short duration. The increased control of goosegrass with combinations of MSMA and s-triazines was attributed to increased herbicidal activity of the combinations as compared to that of either herbicide alone and to the long residual preemergence activity of s-triazines which prevented reinfestation in the field experiment."
