Abstract/Contents:SUMMARY: Three growth retardants, maleic hyudrazide, mefluidide and paclobutrazol singly and mixed together in pairs were applied five times over a 3 year period to lawn turf with mixed grass species. Observations were also made on the effect of these chemicals and mixtures on separate plots of F. rubra and L. perenne. Excellent retardation and reduction in fresh weight were achieved particularly by mixtures of these chemicals in pairs. These mixtures had the further advantage of controlling flowering and of depressing coarser species which paclobutrazol alone at 1.5 kg ha-1 failed to control. However, color was usually poor in the autumn from this chemical and its mixtures. Maleic hydrazide at 4.0 kg ha-1 was least effective as a retardant but encouraged fescues at the expense of coarser grasses, controlled flowering and, though inclined to scorch, generally resulted in good color. Mefluidide at 0.48 kg ha-1 caused excellent dwarfing but was less effective in reducing fresh weight and in both these respects resembled paclobutrazol; however, it controlled flowering and though it sometimes caused off-color early in the season, plots sprayed with mefluidide were usually outstanding for their rich green color. The mixture of maleic hydrazide and mefluidide was slightly less effective in retarding than mixtures containing paclobutrazol. It is concluded that though the retardants singly performed well especially mefluidide, mixtures of these chemicals in pairs particularly those including paclobutrazol could be used most successfully on lawn turf to reduce mowing but some temporary off-color must be expected."
