Abstract/Contents:"Magnaporthe grisea (anamorph Pyricularia grisea) causes blast in rice and gray leaf spot (GLS) in turfgrass. Much work has been done to elicit the genetic mechanism of blast resistance in rice. Gray leaf spot resistance in turfgrass has been documented but little is known about the genes responsible for this resistance. To investigate if homologues of rice defense genes are conserved in turfgrass and involved in the defense response to GLS infection, Southern and Northern blot analysis methods were used. Genomic DNA from St. Augustinegrass was hybridized to 47 rice defense response genes originally identified by subtractive suppression hybridization (SSH). St. Augustinegrass DNA strongly hybridized with thirteen SSH rice genes. Northern blot analysis is underway to determine the expression of these genes in GLS resistant and susceptible cultivars of St. Augustinegrass. Cross infection assays of different M. grisea isolates on rice and turfgrass will be presented."
