Abstract/Contents:"Anthracnose basal rot (ABR), caused by Colletotrichum graminicola (Ces.) Wils., is a destructive disease of annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.) and creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.) golf course putting greens. Typically, only one of these turfgrass species is affected by ABR when both are present in putting greens. Studies have been conducted to determine if isolates of C. graminicola from annual bluegrass, creeping bentgrass, and other host species are host specific. Results of a recent study conducted at the University of Rhode Island showed that C. graminicola isolates from creeping bentgrass incited disease on creeping bentgrass and annual bluegrass, whereas those from annual bluegrass were restricted to annual bluegrass. A similar study conducted at Penn State University revealed that C. graminicola isolates were more virulent on the host species from which they were isolated, but strict host specificity was not observed. Other aspects of host specificity and pathogenicity of C. graminicola will be discussed."
