Abstract/Contents:Discusses the reluctancy that superintendents may have in using rollers due to possible rootzone compaction, bruised turf leaf tissue and spread of turfgrass diseases. Presents a study which "considered the impact of season-long rolling on green, speed, soil compaction and turfgrass quality" at Michigan State University, North Carolina State University, and Pennsylvania State University. Results at all three universities indicated that limited rolling did not diminish the turfgrass quality or increase soil compaction. Reports that putting greens that have been rolled are faster in comparison to putting greens that have not been rolled. Presents results from research conducted in the 1990s regarding rolling sand top-dressing. Presents a study using different roller types and the effects on turfgrass color, turfgrass quality, water infiltration, soil compaction and green speed. Discusses double-cutting in comparision to rolling. Presents results of studies conducted to determine the effects of long-term lightweight rolling studies.
