Abstract/Contents:Looks at the many aspects of older golf courses to determine whether it will need full renovation or partial renovation. Suggests that when beginning a renovation, a golf course architect should be consulted. Lists some "key elements of design that should be taken into account in the analysis of putting greens". States that renovation must occur if hole locations per green drops below five and gives common numbers of holes per green when dealing with high trafficked greens and low trafficked greens. Suggests that when determining a green's playability it must be determined what is fair before beginning. Lists three points at which surface drainage becomes a serious problem in order to determine whether renovation is needed. Suggests lab testing of rootzones in order to determine the physical characteristics of the soil. Promotes caution when comparing results to it for the standards of modern courses. Suggest performing visual examinations of the rootzone and lists common problems seen during these examinations. Also suggests checking drainage systems to ensure they are working properly. Proposes having a landscape surveyor measure obstacles surrounding problem greens in order to determine sunlight exposure on greens. Suggests adequate air flow will promote better growth of greens by cooling them.
