| Abstract/Contents: | Profiles the transformations that were done at the Sagniaw Metal Casting Operations (SMCO), stating that "the original goal at SMCO was to improve upon the display at another General Motors Manufacturing plant in Messina, Ohio." Discusses the evolution of the concept, stating that "everyone realized that an actual wetland outside the lobby would have significantly more impact on visitors than a lobby display." Describes the restoration of the lobby and entry canopy to the original 1928 design by Albert Kahn. Discusses the selection of the wood, the installation of the water feature and the plant selection. Describes the final result and the reaction of the community. Concludes that "whenever you are approached to do a project, it is critical to take in the big picture. By discovering and responding to the project goals rather than just designing what is asked for, the outcome will be enhanced." |
