Abstract/Contents:Provides the contractors view of the past, present and the future of sports turf. The turf industry was, for some time, associated with agriculture but has grown distinctly apart in the past thirty years. Technological advances have brought turf management to an unprecedented level of control and improvement. In the seventies, sand was mixed with soil to improve texture and proved to be relatively successful. Hot undersoil heating systems were implemented to protect from frost, but over time the systems baked the soils around the pipes making the soil impenetrable. Equipment damage used today is much more powerful and productive than tools used in the past. Developments in decompaction machinery over the last twenty years his grown greatly, as well as laser leveling that has made accuracy of +/- 5mm possible. Future issues and possibilities are discussed.
