| Abstract/Contents: | "Irrigation is the replacement, or supplementation of precipitation (hail, rain, dew or snow) with water from a secondary source and is required when water levels within the plants' growing medium become unsuitable for successful growth." Article provides a brief history and milestones of the evolution of irrigation. It was not until the development of the diesel and electric motors that irrigation became a commercial business that we know it today. The development of aboveground watering was not only used in times of drought, but as a tool for the increasing demands of the sport. By the 1980s the first 'central computer' controller was developed and provided turfgrass managers with the ability to tightly control water usage. Further development of computers and the more advanced models that are implemented, water management will have greater control and efficiency of water usage. |
