Abstract/Contents:Provides a historical overview of the seed industry, and discusses developments within it. Grass available had some "ability" for finer turf uses, was recognized improvements could me made. Article states, "this is why the STRI came into existence." STRI's first act within the new research organization was to sow grass trials to evaluate existing material and identify new grasses. The STRI breeding program for red fescues led to the development of 'Dawson' red fescue, which was later sold to a Dutch seed company in the 1960s. This event helped clarify the STRI role: to concentrate on evaluating the performance of grasses. Article states that, "In doing this, STRI has become a world-renowned centre for independently assessing the performance of grasses for all major sports and amenity uses." Details how grasses of the future will be needed to be more resistant to pathogens and less palatable to pests. Summarizes by stating, " the seed industry will continue to breed better grasses that will help our whole industry to meet future challenges and requirements. In doing this, they will produce more attractive and wear tolerant grasses that require less maintenance."
