Abstract/Contents: | Presents a study conducted "to evaulate the sensitivity of some turfgrass cultivars to brown patch [Rhizoctonia solani], dollar spot [Sclerotinia homoeocarpa], and pink snow mould [Microdochium nivale] strains under growth chamber, greenhouse and field conditions." States that these diseases "are the most important turfgrass diseases in Northern Italy." Describes the study stating that the "the susceptibility of 12 cultivars of Lolium perenne 10 of Festuca arundinacea and 5 of Poa pratensis was tested. Trials were carried out in growth chamber, greenhouse, and in open field on Rhizoctonia solani, Sclerotinia homoeocarpa and Microdochium nivale pathogens." Results indicate that "among L. perenne cultivars, Adeline and Recital were very susceptible to pink snow mould, and Bartwingo was the most sensitive to brown patch. 'Blue Knight,' as well as 'Conni,' were partially reistant to pink snow mould, but sensitive to brown patch. Barcrista was the most resistant P. pratensis cultivar to R. solani." Also states that "collected data from P. pratensis trials show that Blue Knight is the lowest susceptible cultivar to R. solani and S. homoeocarpa, where as Barcrista is the most susceptible cultivar to R. solani; Baronie is the most susceptible cultivar to S. homoeocarpa." Concludes that "the importance to evaluate the disease resistance in field conditions in different climatic regions is a basic practice in national evaluation programs and we hope disease ratings will be inserted in future Italian evaluation programs to provide an important technical support in low input turfgrass maintenance." |
