Abstract/Contents: | "The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith), is a major pest of many turfgrass species in the Americas and the Caribbean Basin. Forty bermudagrass, Cynodon spp., genotypes were evaluated for resistance to both neonate and 4-day-old larvae in no-choice laboratory feeding studies at Dallas, TX USA. Larvae were evaluated for mortality at various growth stages, larval and pupal weights and days to develop from egg hatch to pupation and adult emergence. None of the bermudagrass cultivars provided high resistance, but three cultivars (4200W- 49-17, 4200W 53-1 and 4200W 55-5) did produce larval mortality of 42 to 52%, identified as failure of the individuals to emerge as adults from the pupal stage. Among the commercial bermudagrass cultivars evaluated, mortality was <21% at pupation and <25% at adult emergence." |
