Abstract/Contents: | Discusses soil testing, focusing on base cation saturation ration (BCSR). Suggests that "base saturation is a tool and only a tool, not without its limitations. But it works, and it works every time." Explains that BCSR "works best on higher CEC [cation exchange capacity] soil profiles; it is not as strong a tool on silica or calcareous sand profiles. Base saturation is the percentage of cations (positively charged elements) on the soil colloid." Mentions possible advantages and disadvantages of the BCSR soil testing method and cautions that "it is very important that the lab that performs the test is using a complete base saturation profile. Many labs only list calcium, magnesium and potassium percentages; this is not enough information to build adequate fertility recommendations." Concludes that if BCSR "didn't work well it wouldn't be the choice of so many who make their living on the successes of their clients." |
