Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the death of Damian Vondra and safety precautions that may have prevented his death. Explains that Vondra was operating a riding greens mower when it "rolled over into a greenside bunker...[he] was knocked unconscious in the accident [and] was unable to breathe from the enormous pressure the...mower exerted on his...frame." States that "Vondra's death was unnecessary and could have been avoided." Also states that "safety devices, such as roll bars, seat belts and harnesses are available for all riding mowers, but are not standard issue...Such options can be installed for about $1,500 per mower." Concludes that "thousands of times each day on golf courses across the country, superintendents, assistants and crew members mow near bunkers without incident...[Vondra's] fate should serve as a lesson to all." |
