Question: | "It was our intention to have a new small playing field sown with a general purpose grass seeds mixture in early autumn, but due to circumstances out of our control this has not been done, and the seed bed has not yet been prepared. Is it now too late to finish the job?" |
Answer/Response: | "It is best to complete seed bed preparation and sowing during favourable weather conditions in late August. This year we have had very open weather up to date, and seeding could still be carried out, but as the seed bed has not been prepared, is the soil still in suitable condition to allow preparation of a fine seed bed? If the soil is not in such a condition, then the germination and establishment particularly of the finer species of grass in your general mixture may not be good. This means that it will take longer to obtain good sward density and therefore full use of the field would be delayed. Moreover, inadequate soil preparation means compaction etc. in the soil which adversely affects playing conditions for a very long time. Further, if the top soil is worked when it is wet its drainage properties are affected detrimentally and this is a factor which can only dealt with satisfactorily by re-establishment, i.e. you may find it necessary in two or three years' time to re-establish the sward on the area by ploughing etc. Should there be any doubt about getting the site well cultivated in the next few days then defer seed bed preparation and seeding until next spring, e.g. during favourable weather conditions in April." |
