Question: | "Several of our bowling greens are much affected by patches of Yorkshire fog, and we were wondering whether it would be possible to eliminate this by shaving the grass very closely (say at 1/16 in.) Alternatively is there some selective grass killing chemical we can use? Your comments would be appreciated." |
Answer/Response: | "Cutting at levels below 3/16 in. is not recommended. The Yorkshire fog may well be little affected, as it can survive by growing horizontally beneath the blades of the mower, even at very low cutting levels. On the other hand, the desirable fine turf grasses are likely to be weakened and this will lay the sward open to invasion by moss and low-growing weeds. A patchy uneven sward is likely to be the result of too close cutting. There are unfortunately no selective grass killers available yet and so control of Yorkshire fog has to be by physical methods. If the patches are small and not too numerous they can be cut out and replaced with fresh turf. If you have a lot of Yorkshire fog so that this is impracticable it can be weakened and reduced by regular severe scarification, possibly applied only to the individual patches." |
