Abstract/Contents: | Discusses winterizing irrigation systems, explaining that it "consists primarily of expelling all of the water from the irrigation system piping and equipment." Explains that water expands upon freezing and that "this expansion force is sufficient to cause pipes and fittings to burst, valves to crack, sprinkler cases to split open, and other damage to the irrigation system." States that "the only way to ensure expulsion of all water from the system is by using compressed air to blow it out." Recommends developing a written winterization procedure and having an "accurate 'as built' drawing of [the] system with critical 'high' and 'low' elevations indicated." States that "a sufficient volume of air is required to move the water through the pipes full diameter" and that "air pressures should be in the range of 40 to 60 psi [pounds per square inch]." Recommends installing a pressure regulating valve and pressure gauge and introducing compressed air at the highest point on the system. Details the steps of the blow out process starting with shutting off the system's water supply, connecting the compressor to the system and activating it. Recommends blowing out zones that are farthest from the point of introduction first and noting any pipe or fitting breaks. States that "after...a sufficient number of cycles that only a mist is coming from the sprinklers on all zones" the operation is ready for shut down. Details steps recommended for winterizing the pumping station which "includes making sure that all water is purged from the various sections and components of the pumping station." |
