Abstract/Contents: | Discusses possible methods of preventing ice damage to turf. Suggests ice removal when "ice forms in December or January...If the ice forms in February [it should be removed] because it is still possible to have ice cover for more than a month." States that "newly formed ice is less organized and more easily removed. Let the ice solidify for 30 days, and it will approximate six-sack concrete." Suggests removing "loose snow from [the] green quickly with small snow blowers or plows...Rotary brooms can also help when they follow behind the blowers by removing more of the loose stuff the blowers leave behind" or "if the ice is too thick to handle with shovels, move up to motorized equipment." Mentions the use of melting salts. Cautions that one "must avoid common ice melting salts because they contain sodium." Suggests the use of charcoal and fertilizer as ice melters. Also mentions the use of covers that may help protect greens from winter injury. |
