Facility Names: | Stanley Golf Course, in New Britain, Connecticut |
Abstract/Contents: | Discusses "warmer-than-average conditions through the early parts of winter" 2007 in areas of the United States. States that "at Stanley Golf Course in New Britain, [Connecticut], golfers were on the course in early January for the first time since the place opened in 1930. Initially, the municipal facility had closed for the season in December [2006]. It was reopened because of...mild weather and after New Britain Parks and REcreation Director Bill DeMaino and superintendent John Napier decided that doing so would not threaten the turf at the 27-hole operation." Mentions that "the extra business also has helped offset loses from...spring [2006], when play was off about 5 percent because of heavy amounts of rain." Mentions that "golf courses in other parts of the country enjoyed similar unexpected business through winter's first few weeks", including Devou Park Golf Course in Covington, Kentucky. Suggests that "golfers scurrying to the course during breaks from winter's grip were those whom the National Golf Foundation categorizes as core golfers, or those playing at least eight rounds per year." |
