Abstract/Contents: | "The performances of five materials used for reinforcing areas of sports turf were evaluated, with the experimental work being conducted on both sandy loam and sand carpet rootzones. The response to artificial football-type wear was recorded from September 1986 to May 1987 with the principal measurements being ground cover, surface ponding of water, traction, hardness, ball rebound resilience and ball roll. On the topsoil area, four of the reinforcement materials (Tecnotile, Tensar mat, VHAF (700 g m-2) and VHAF (1150 g m-2)) had advantageous effects on ground cover, surface ponding, ball rebound resilience and ball roll. Tensar mat, VHAF and fibre reinforcement also led to some improvement in traction. The use of a free-draining sand carpet construction gave considerable improvement in ground cover, surface ponding, hardness, ball rebound resilience and ball roll relative to topsoil area. On the sand carpet construction the effects of the reinforcement materials were small compared to their effects on the topsoil area. The principal disadvantages of the reinforcement materials were poor traction with Tecnotile and problems of grass establishment on the VHAF, which subsequently affected ground cover on the sand rootzone. Although no excessive traction values were recorded in the study, some concern is expressed about the possibility of studded footwear locking into aeration tine holes in semi-rigid geotextiles and it is recommended that such materials are installed below stud depth and that regular checks are made on anchorage. Overall the results were sufficiently encouraging to support the use of certain types of turf reinforcement where heavy play limits the use of pitches because of damage to high wear areas such as goalmouths." |
