Abstract/Contents: | "Established centipedegrass [Eremochloa ophiuroides (Munro.) Hack] has been shown to be tolerant of the postemergence herbicide, sethoxydim. The first objective of this study was to determine tolerance and annual grass control in seedling centipedegrass with sethoxydim. The second objective was to determine the tolerance of established centipedegrass and the perennial grass control with repeated applications of sethoxydim. Six small plot tests were established on commercial sod farms in north Florida and south Georgia. Three tests were on seedling centipedegrass and three tests involved established centipedegrass infested with a perennial, grassy weed. Reported results will be the average of three locations. Each test was in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Herbicide treatments were applied with a CO2 powered backpack sprayer delivering 187 1/ha. Oil concentrate at 2.3 1/ha was added to all treatments containing sethoxydim. Sethoxydim at 0.22 kg/ha produced no adverse effects on seedling centipedegrass while providing excellent annual grass control. Sethoxydim at rates of 0.45 and 0.67 kh/ha caused a temporary, reddish discoloration of centipedegrass seedlings and reduced seedling growth up to 22%. These treatments did not reduce the stand of seedling centipedegrass. However, the tank mix of sethoxydim and atrazine caused excessive injury and 38% stand reduction. Established centipedegrass discoloration from repeated sethoxydim applications occurred at one of three locations. A general yellowing of the centipedegrass turf appeared following the third application of sethoxydim at 0.34 kg/ha. Discoloration was present at two weeks after the third application, but not after four weeks. The discoloration did not reappear after the fourth sethoxydim application to the same plots, indicating that the discoloration may be associated with factors other than the herbicide application alone. Generally, as the number of sethoxydim applications increased, the reduction in centipedegrass stolen growth also increased. Control of bahiagrass or bermudagrass required two sethoxydim applications of 0.34 kg/ha to achieve control over 60%. Excellent control was obtained with three or four sethoxydim applications. Two sethoxydim applications of 0.34 kg/ha each provided much better control than one application at 0.67 kg/ha. In the case of the bahiagrass, sethoxydim applications suppressed seedhead formulation of the uncontrolled bahiagrass. A tank mix of sethoxydim and atrazine produced less bahiagrass control and less seedhead suppression than sethoxydim alone." |
