Abstract/Contents: | "Fungicides were evaluated for control of dollar spot and effects on turf quality in creeping bentgrass putting greens. This trial was conducted at the Lake Wheeler Turfgrass Field Laboratory in Raleigh, NC on 'Crenshaw' creeping bentgrass. Mowing was performed five times weekly at a height of 0.140-in. (10 Jan to 7 Feb), 0.130-in. (8 Feb to 19 Jun), and 0.160-in. (after 19 Jun) with clippings collected. The site was irrigated to prevent drought stress. Fertilizer was applied as 15-15-15 on 14 Jan (0.5 lb nitrogen (N)/1,000 sq ft), 46-0-0 on 23 Jan (0.25 lb N/1,000 sq ft), 18-0-12 on 4 Feb (0.5 lb N/1,000 sq ft), 18-9-18 on 7 Mar and 11 Apr (0.75 and 0.5 lb N/1000 sq ft respectively), and 18-3-16 on 18 Apr and 7 May (0.25 lb N/1,000 sq ft respectively). Dolomitic lime was applied on 3 Apr at 25 lb/1,000 sq ft. Micronutrients were applied as Brexel Multi (2 oz/1,000 sq ft) on 18 Apr. Insect pests were suppressed with Allectus GC (125 lb/A) and Dursban Pro (1.5 fl oz/1000 sq ft) on 23 May and 9 Jul, respectively. Wetting agents were applied on 21 Mar and 23 Apr (Cascade 8 fl oz/1,000 sq ft), and 4 Jun and 14 Jul (Cascade + Duplex, 4 fl oz + 1 fl oz). Plots were 3.33 ft x 6 ft and were arranged in a randomized complete block with four replications. Fungicides were applied in water equivalent to 2 gal per 1,000 sq ft with a CO2- powered sprayer at 40 psi using a TeeJet 9508E nozzle. All treatments were initiated on 30 Apr. Fungicides were reapplied at the appropriate intervals as indicated in the table. The experimental area was inoculated on 23 Apr using rye grain infested with S. Homoeocarpa isolates RE-18G-4, RE-18G-35, and LWC-5 to encourage dollar spot development. Dollar spot incidence was assessed weekly from 19 May through 11 Aug and on 25 Aug by counting the number of infection centers per plot. Data from 9 and 23 Jun, 7 and 21 Jul, and 5 Aug are presented. Phytotoxicity (0 to 5 scale where 0=no phytotoxic effects, 5=total plot necrotic) and turfgrass quality (1 to 9 scale where 9=best, 5=acceptable based on color, density, and uniformity) were evaluated weekly from 23 Jun through 11 Aug and on 25 Aug. Data from 23 Jun, 7 and 21 Jul, and 5 Aug are presented. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and means separation by Waller-Duncan k-ratio t test (k=100). Dollar spot incidence was very high in the experiment. All treatments controlled dollar spot compared to the untreated control. A15935 (2.5 fl oz, 21-day interval), Banner MAXX (1.0 fl oz, 21-day interval), and Spectro did not provide acceptable disease suppression on most rating dates. All other treatments presented good to excellent dollar spot control throughout the study. Phytotoxic effects were observed from both rates of A6780 and Eagle on all rating dates. All Banner MAXX treatments, Bayleton, Headway, Tartan, and Concert produced phytotoxic effects on two or more rating dates. Turf quality in the Spectro treatment was unacceptable on 7 and 21 Jul. All other treatments provided acceptable to excellent turf quality on all rating dates." |
