Abstract/Contents: | "The effect of container media moisture status on leaf gas exchange and stomatal characteristics of six birch taxa (Betula. nigra L., B. nigra L. 'Heritage', B. papyrifera Marsh., B. pendula Roth, B. populifolia (Regel) Nakai 'Whitespire', and B. utilis var. jacquemontii Spach.) was evaluated. Trees were grown in a greenhouse and watered when the combined mass of six indicator pots of each taxa decreased by 25% (well-watered/control), 45% (moderate drought) or 60% (severe drought). Plants in the drought stress treatment group had a lower CO2 assimilation rate, evapotranspiration and stomatal conductance than plants in well-watered group. Betual nigra exposed to severe drought maintained higher CO2 assimilation rate while B. nigra 'Heritage' had higher evaportranspiration and stomatal conductance. Taxa variance had a more significant effect on the stomatal parameters than drought treatments." |
