Abstract/Contents: | "Fungicides were evaluated for their effect on dollar spot control on creeping bentgrass when applied on a preventive basis. This study was conducted at the University of Connecticut Plant Science Research Facility located in Storrs, CT. Mowing was performed 4 times weekly at a height of 0.5-in. Fungicides were applied with a CO2 pressurized (40 psi) sprayer equipped with a flat-fan nozzle, and calibrated to deliver 2.0 gal water per 1000 ft2. Treatments were applied on the dates footnoted in the data table. Treatment BS-SSTA2004 was watered-in with approximately 0.1 inch of water immediately following application. Treatments were applied on the dates footnoted in the data table. Plots measured 3 ft x 6 ft, and were arranged in a randomized complete block with four replications. Percent of plot area blighted by S. homoeocarpa was assessed visually on a linear 0 to 100% scale where 0 = entire plot area green and healthy, and 100 = entire plot area blighted. Treatments with ratings exceeding 0.5% plot area blighted by S. homoeocarpa subjectively were considered to be unacceptable or at the threshold for re-treatment of a golf course fairway. Disease pressure was considered severe between late-Jun and early-Aug. Dollar spot symptoms became visible in untreated plots soon after the application of treatments on 1 Jun. By 19 Jul, percent of untreated control plots affected by S. homoeocarpa reached 24%. Except for wetting agent treatments ACA 1820 and ACA 2663 and biofungicide treatment BS-SSTA2004, all fungicide treated plots exhibited acceptable (≤ 0.5%) dollar spot levels between 7 Jun and 19 Jul (all data not shown). Although plots treated with Trinity (21-d interval), Manicure Ultra alone, and Manicure 6L contained unacceptable levels of dollar spot (≥ 0.5%) on 3 Aug (22 days since last treatment; DAT), disease incidence was not significantly different from treatments providing excellent control of dollar spot. On 16 Aug, disease pressure was extremely severe and an average of 67% dollar spot was observed in the untreated control plots. Treatments continuing to provide excellent dollar spot suppression (≤ 0.5%) at this time included Concert, Instrata, Spectator Ultra alone, Spectator Ultra + Manicure Ultra, CLEXP-16 (2.3 fl oz), and CLEXP-9. No significant differences, however, were noted between the aforementioned treatments and treated plots containing unacceptable levels (0.9 to 7.5%) of dollar spot. On the final rating date (24 Aug), only Spectator Ultra alone (43 DAT) and Spectator Ultra + Manicure Ultra (43 DAT) provided acceptable dollar spot control. Except for plots treated with ACA 1820, ACA 2663 and BS-SSTA2004, treated plots contained significantly less dollar spot when compared to untreated control plots on all rating dates. Significant reductions in dollar spot, however, were observed in plots treated with the wetting agent ACA 2663 on 4 of 11 rating dates, when compared to untreated control plots." |
