Abstract/Contents:"Although the use of wetting agents remains the primary tool for managing hydrophobic soils, very little is known about the effects of these materials on the actual rooting potential of creeping bentrass. For example, what effect does the wetting agent have on the depth and extensiveness of the root system? Are there gross or even subtle morphological differences in the root systems of plants growing in wetting agent-treated soil versus non-treated soil? Do these differences allow the plant to better sustain other environmental or cultural stresses? Currently a study is underway in the UGA underground root observation laboratory (rhizotron) which will attempt to answer these questions. The rhizotron will allow continuous and undisturbed observation of root growth of Penncross creeping bentgrass growing in a hydrophobic soil treated with a wetting agent. This study will be conducted during the summer and fall of 1997."
