Abstract/Contents: | The factors affecting successful sowing of grasses, particularly seed rate, are discussed with reference to the literature. Seed rate depends on many factors such as emergence rate, grain size, 1000-seed weights, mixture quality and the purpose of the turf. Variations in 1000-seed weights for Lolium perenne, Poa pratensis and Festuca rubra are quoted from various sources. It is concluded that because of the many variables, assessment of an optimum seed rate for grass is difficult and that a single basic formula for calculating seed rate (as is used for cereals) is not feasible. |
