Abstract/Contents: | The course described was established on dark sand that had a high percentage of fine particles and was very hydrophobic. There were six greens that were bare and dying. It was diagnosed as chronic anaerobiose, probably due to excessive fertiliser and watering, and insufficient renovation. Algae appeared after seeded greens were laid down. Phosphorus, for nurtrition, was kept at low levels in the hope of limiting Poa annua invasion from infested fairways. After rebuilding new turfs Poa annua was invading all greens greatly. A spraying program only weakened the bent that was laid down. The results after wetting agent and fertiliser were applied were disastrous. Algae bloomed, and greens melted away. After looking for some clues and writing letters the author came upon a phenomenon called "black layer". It was caused by anaerobic sulphur, reducing bacteria. There are many other factors such as improper soil mix, incorrect top-dressing, lack of renovation, water logged conditions in winter, etc... Until recently nobody had any understanding of the situation. New knowledge will complete this puzzle. |
