Abstract/Contents: | "Laboratory observations of ice formation in pasture grass species show that the degree of tissue damage depends on two factors, the lowest temperature reached and the degree of undercooling. The first is easy to measure but is made difficult to relate to tissue damage by the need to find out if undercooling occurred during freezing. The previous occurrence of undercooling cannot by determined by looking at the appearance of frozen tissues, as was suggested by Siminovitch and Scarth (1938), since the typical appearance of extracellular ice formation, once thought as invariably associated with the absence of intracellular ice formation and undercooling, can be present when both have occurred. Because of this it can not be assumed that undercooling and intracellular ice formation are not important to plant survival under 'natural' winter conditions and it is necessary to study undercooling in different species and cultivars of grass in a range of cold environments in order to identify those situations in which undercooling could be expected to occur. The techniques and apparatus used in such a study and the results of the investigation have been reported elsewhere (Habeshaw 1976)." |
