Abstract/Contents: | "Dunes, cliffs, forests and the 17-mile drive - Monterey Peninsula has it all." Pebble Beach is one of the several challenging and beautiful courses in the Monterey Peninsula. This course has often had conditioning problems (it logs 50,000 rounds a year), and it needs some work to have it prepared for the 1992 U.S. Open. Jack Nicklaus has been engaged to restore the 71-year-old layout to its original design (mainly the greens) and condition. Spanish Bay is the fifth golf course up the coast from Pebble Beach but in appearance is another world. The only problem with this course is that the greens are unlike the other courses in the area in speed and texture. They are of fescue that thrives in Scotland, but apparently not in California. Since the fescue is not thriving, it is not thick enough to mow closely, which means that the greens are too slow. One notable aspect of Spyglass Hill is the ice plant, a leechlike growth that grabs the golf ball firmly and lets go only after repeated whacks with a sand wedge. Poppy Hills, headquarters for the Northern California Golf Association, is a lovely course and is kept in top condition despite the exigencies of an interminable drought. Old Del Monte, the oldest course in the area, is a short course with none of the drama of its coastal neighbors, but it is still good enough to have hosted the California State Amateur for years. |
