Abstract/Contents: | "Several fungicides were evaluated for control of large patch on an established stand of Zoysia matrella ('Cavalier') at the University of Arkansas, Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Fayetteville, AR. Plots were maintained under simulated golf course fairway conditions, with a mowing height of 0.5-in., irrigation applied to replace 100% ET, and nitrogen fertilizer (46-0-0) applied at a rate of 3.0 lb. N / 1,000 ft2 for the entire growing season. Immediately prior to fungicide applications, each plot was inoculated with two isolates of R. solani that had been cultured on sterile oat seeds for 4 weeks prior to inoculation. A small plug (2-in. diameter and 1-in. depth) was removed from the turf, and 1 tablespoon of infested oat seeds was placed in the hole, and the turf replaced. Each isolate was inoculated into separate spots, three feet apart, within the plot. Initial fungicide applications were made on 21 Sep 2010, and all fungicide programs were applied either twice in the fall, four times in the fall, or once in both the fall and spring (24 Mar 2011) when green-up was observed on the zoysiagrass. Fungicides were applied with a CO2-powered sprayer in 30 gal/A water at an operating pressure of 32 psi using 8002 flat-fan nozzles. Plot size for each treatment was 4 x 10 ft, and each treatment was replicated four times in a randomized complete block design. Within each block, three untreated control (check) plots were included, and data for check plots were averaged within each rep prior to statistical analysis. Plots were visually rated for disease incidence (% infected area) at least monthly throughout the fall and spring period. The inoculation method was very successful, and heavy disease pressure was observed in these plots during both the fall and spring periods. By the end of the fall disease period (29 Nov) and prior to full dormancy, the untreated check plots had over 50% large patch incidence. Moreover, the check treatments had over 90% large patch at the end of the spring period (6 May). Several of the treatments, including Prostar, Eagle, Heritage, Velista, and Affirm, provided good protection from large patch during the fall, and those treatments also provided good control in the early spring (31 Mar) evaluations. Over the remainder of the spring period, most treatments began to lose efficacy, and large patch was present (>20%) in all plots by the final evaluation. Treatments that provided the best season-long control included Prostar, Heritage, and Velista, and Affirm followed by (fb) Torque. Treatments that provided poor control of large patch included Insigna plus Trinity, ISK-IB1805, and Torque alone. No phytotoxicity was observed with any of these treatment combinations." |
