Abstract/Contents: | Since even the best planned golf course can be damaged by poor care, and poorly planned golf courses can be ecologically improved through careful maintenance, environmentalists and greenkeepers must work together to effect the construction of ever more environmentally oriented golf courses. Indeed, it should be the task of conservationists to raise the status of the greenkeeper, as it is the greenkeeper who can control and alter maintenance to suit the environment's needs. Each golf course is an unique entity; no standard model golf course can be held up and copied across the country. Therefore, exact planning for each course is vital. Studies show that only 5% of the total surface that makes up a golf course need be kept isolated from the environment surrounding it. The kind of care performed on tees and greens need not be carried over into the other areas of the course that could be used instead as sites for conserving precious biotopes. Some of the 10 demands that need be upheld are as follows: 1) the creation of as much minimally careed for surfaces as possible, at least 80% of the course 2) employing only qualified workers and technicians so as to ensure minimal disturbance of the surrounding environment during construction 3)planting only vegetation indigenous to the area 4) planning maintenance in accordance to environmental laws and the requests of a greenkeeper 5) planning for the course's water needs long before actual construction begins. Implementation of these and other points will ensure that no ecological disasters are caused by a golf course. |
