Abstract/Contents: | "Determining pathogen variation is an important aspect in screening for disease resistance. The objectives of this study were to assess the variation in cultural characteristics and pathogenicity within a local population of Magnaporthe poae Landschoot and Jackson and to determine if selected isolates exhibit differential disease expression in various Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) cultivars. Forty-seven isolates of M. poae collected from golf courses in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania were used to inoculate `Baron' Kentucky bluegrass and annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.). Nine isolates were selected to inoculate nine cultivars of Kentucky bluegrass. Results showed significant variation in cultural characteristics and pathogenicity among isolates of M. poae. In general, isolates that were pathogenic on annual bluegrass were also pathogenic on Kentucky bluegrass. Inoculation of M. poae isolates on cultivars of Kentucky bluegrass revealed a significant isolate by cultivar interaction, indicating that some differential susceptibility exists. Results are somewhat ambiguous, however, since the experiment was conducted in growth chambers and was a severe test of Kentucky bluegrass resistance. Results suggest that screening for summer patch resistance should be conducted with a representative population of M. poae to provide a meaningful assessment of disease resistance." |
