Abstract/Contents:"The laboratory determinations of clinoptilolite particle size influence on ammonium retention, nitrification, aeration, drainage and moisture holding capacity were conducted. The results indicated that clinoptilolite zeolite, with a particle size ranged from 0.25 to 2mm used at 10% to amend sand, was found to provide for good physical properties and ammonium retention. The sand/zeolite mixture had an average of 43 cm/hour hydraulic conductivity, 46% of total porosity, and 1.4 g/cm3 of bulk density, which conforms to the USGA specifications for putting green construction. Greenhouse experiments were conducted to determine the influences of amending sand with clinoptilolite zeolite on water and nitrogen use efficiency and nitrogen leaching from creeping bentgrass. Clinoptilolite amendment of sand in a root zone significantly enhanced water use efficiency and drought tolerance of creeping bentgrass, increased tissue nitrogen content (N use efficiency) and reduced the nitrate leaching, Increasing nitrogen content. A significant N loss by leaching was observed at the highest N level without zeolite amendment of sand."
