Abstract/Contents: | "The establishment rate of Japanese Lawn Grass (Zoysia japonica Steud.) and Manilagrass [Zoysia matrella (L.) Merr.) cultivars from sprigs is important to consider when selecting species and cultivars. Establishment rate affects time to initial cover as well as recovery time following thinning due to abiotic or biotic stresses. The objective of this research was to determine the time needed to establish zoysiagrass from sprigs. Four Z. japonica cultivars ('JaMur', 'Palisades', 'Empire', and 'Ultimate') and five Z. matrella cultivars ('Cavalier', 'Diamond', 'Pristine', 'Zeon' and 'Zorro') were established from sprigs during June 2008 and July 2009 at the Sandhills Research Station in Jackson Springs, NC. Percent cover was determined using both visual estimates and digital image analysis. A strong, positive correlation between methods existed in both years (R2 of 0.86 and 0.91 for the 2008 and 2009 trials, respectively). In both years, Z. japonica cultivars established, on average, more rapidly than Z. matrella cultivars. Zoysia japonica cultivars averaged 86 days and 72 days to reach 90% cover compared to 104 and 83 days for Z. matrella cultivars during 2008 and 2009, respectively. Establishment rate did not vary significantly among Z. japonica cultivars in either year. During 2009, Diamond Z. matrella established more slowly than all other Z. matrella cultivars while Pristine established more quickly than all other Z. matrella cultivars during 2009. While both species can be expected to achieve complete cover in one growing season, Z. japonica would be expected to do so in a shorter time." |
