Abstract/Contents: | "Analyses of results of separate replicates in 33,000 routine germination tests showed variation consistent with that expected from simple random sampling, apart from about 1% of the tests, where true problems or errors are presumed to have occurred. Thus the only improvement possible in internal consistency, for these seeds of common temperate crop and pasture species is in the elimination of these errors, and not a general improvement in technique. Problems were more prevalent with Beta vulgaris than with the pasture species. The value of retesting on account of replicate variability for Lolium perenne is questioned. Similar results from an experiment with Oryza sativa did not show quite such good agreement, but cooperating stations did not have as much experience with several of the techniques for this species. Statistical methods for handling data of this kind are outlined." |
