Abstract/Contents: | "Fairy rings may damage large areas of turf, reducing both visual attractiveness and playing quality, and are thus considered to be an important problem on UK golf courses. Fungicide drenches for the control of fairy rings are generally inefficient due to the low persistency of fungicides in the soil, and also the water-repellent nature of turf infested by fairy rings. A series of field experiments identified tolclofos-methyl as able to achieve more persistent control than standard fairy ring treatments. Effective control was achieved by combinations of tolclofos-methyl and a programme of wetting agents, designed to combat the water-repellent nature of fairy rings. In separate tests, when applied in conjunction with an excavation treatment, cresylic acid was an effective soil-sterilant for the control of M. oreades. As an alternative to drench application, a soil injection technique of applying fungicides was developed, and in field trials the efficiency of drenching and soil injection application techniques was compared. A combination of fungicide applied by soil injection to sub-surface fairy ring mycelium and drench applications to mycelium in the thatch layer was the most effective treatment." |
