Abstract/Contents: | A series of trials is described on the most suitable composition of the drainage layer and overlying grass-bearing layer for sports fields. The subsoil below these layers was enriched with various nutrients and water-retaining materials which improved the turf appearance and made the sward less susceptible to drying. In particular calcium cyanamide at 1000 g/m2 improved the turf color and increased grass growth. In the drainage layer lava or pumice, having a relatively high water capacity, reduced the susceptibility to drying and improved the turf appearance. In a 6-cm-deep vegetation layer overlying pumice the turf withered later than in a 12-cm-deep vegetation layer overlying gravel. In the grass-bearing (vegetation) layer the proportion of fine soil (<0.02 mm) should be < 8%, organic matter < 4% by weight, the water capacity 35-40 vol.% and the water permeability > 0.002 cm/sec. Measures required to bring soils up to these requirements are outlined. |
