Abstract/Contents:"Thirteen cultivars of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) were grown at 3 levels of nitrogen nutrition (N) respectively. Expanded shale (Weblite) was used as the plant support medium, and the nitrogen levels were established by using a standard Hoagland's solution (1.0 N) and Hoagland's solutions modified to contain either 0.1 X N or 3.0 X N. The plants were inoculated with an aqueous spore suspension of Helminthosporium sorokinianum Sacc. ex. Sorokin 11 weeks from the time of seeding. In general, the highest degree of disease resistance occurred in the plant groups grown at the 0.1 X N nutritional regime. When the disease ratings for the 3 nutritional regimes were averaged for each cultivar, their comparative resistance ranked as follows: 'Anheuser' > 'Belturf > 'Geary' > 'Pennstar' = 'Windsor' = 'BA 6124' > 'Park' = 'Kenblue' = 'Cougar' = 'Fylking' = 'Merion' > 'Newport' = 'Delta.' It was also found, however, that the potential for nutritionally-induced alteration of susceptibility to H. sorokinianum varied among cultivars. 'Anheuser,' for example, was highly resistant to the pathogen under all 3 nutritional regimes. The cultivar 'Delta' was highly susceptible at all nutritional levels. 'Park,' on the other hand, was highly resistant to H. sorokinianum when grown at 0.1 X N and highly susceptible under 3.0 X N nutrition. These studies indicate that while the resistance of Kentucky bluegrasses to H. sorokinianum is generally increased under low nitrogen nutrition, the total range of susceptibility of a given cultivar is not fully known until it has been evaluated under a broad spectrum of nutritional regimes."
