Abstract/Contents: | "The use of perforated, clear, plastic tarps has provided significant new advantages in the establishment and renovations of turfgrass. Benefits include faster germination and establishment, especially under adverse cooler climatic conditions; greatly reduced irrigation requirements after planting; less seed loss from birds, wind, and water; and less chances of erosion damage and losses from storm occurrence. Although no replicated, randomized trials have been conducted to provide exact information pertaining to thickness of tarps and the size and spacing of the holes, from the numerous observations where the tarps have been successfully used it appears that a 4 to 6 mill thickness is suitable, with the 6 mill being better for repeated use. Holes about 6 cm in diameter on about 5 cm to 10 cm spacings has yielded very satisfactory results. Methods to secure the tarps in place originally included pegging with wire approximately 3 cm in diameter; but the use of 1 1/4 cm construction iron has proven to be much faster while effectively holding the tarps in place. even under windy conditions. Cautions in the use of the perforated tarps are to watch for mildew and algae if prolonged wet conditions, and heat when temperatures rise above approximately 25 ° C." |
