Abstract/Contents:"Compacted profiles of sand above impermeable barriers have been researched since 1966 at Purdue University. By 1976, over 700 Purr-Wick rootzones were installed in USA and Canada. Eleven PAT (Prescription Athletic Turf) fields based on USA Patent 3,908, 385 of 30 Sept. 75 and Canada Patent 985,516 dated 16 March 76, are in use. The conservation and uniformity above plastic barriers has given freedom in rate and uniformity of surface irrigation since water can penetrate compacted sand rapidly. Also, the maximum conservation of rainfall within the rootzone minimizes the need of supplemental irrigation. Golf Courses report greens are being watered only two to four times per month during the summer in mid-USA climate. Barriers have also reduced fertility loss expected in a sand profile enough so that fertilizing equal to that of a normal soil has been adequate. Early spring fertilization has been on obvious need on sand profiles where leaching occurs overwinter."
