Abstract/Contents: | "Poacure (Methiozolin) is a relatively new herbicide that has been reported to selectively control annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.) in various cool and warm season turfgrasses. The objective of this study was to evaluate phytotoxicity of Poacure on different fine fescue cultivars. The experiment was conducted in a randomized completely block design with three replications, and repeated. Nine different cultivars of fines fescue were seeded in 10*10 cm2 square pots. Methiozolin (Poacure 250EC) was then applied with five different rates, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1 gal/acre at four different application timings, four weeks before seeding (4 WBS), two weeks before seeding(2 WBS), at seeding(AtS) and two weeks after germination(2 WAG). Non-treated controls were included for each cultivar. Pictures of each pots were taken with a light box biweekly after germination. Green percent coverage data were collected using SigmaScan. Above ground tissue was harvested 8 weeks after germination, fresh and dry weight were measured. Significant reduction in green percent coverage was observed when Poacure was applied before germination. It is relatively safer to apply Poacure two weeks after germination, however, higher rate also lead to reduction in green percentage cover. ANOVA analysis showed cultivar, application rate, application timing all have significant effect on the green percentage cover. Interaction between rate and application time was also significant, suggesting that changes in application rate will affect the green percent coverage of fine fescue differently depending on the application timing." |
