Abstract/Contents: | "Soil physical properties of three types of golf green construction, supporting an established Agrostis/Festuca sward were examined before and after the application of artificial golf-type wear and differential rates of irrigation and nitrogen fertiliser. The rootzones of the three constructions consisted of a sandy loam topsoil, a mixture of sand, peat and soil conforming to the United States Golf Association (USGA) specification for a rootzone mix, and a pure sand. Soil pore structure of the sand-based rootzones changed slowly over time, but infiltration rates fell markedly, possibly due to the sealing off of the surface with organic material. Irrigation treatment had no effects on any of the features measured, but increased rate of nitrogen fertiliser application appeared to increase infiltration rates on the sand-based rootzones. The soil constructions showed a reduction in the proportion of pore spaces greater than 200 um in diameter in the top 10-90 mm of the profile, probably due to compaction processes. Infiltration rates on the soil constructions were consistently very low, but increased for a short period following the application of a "Verti-Drain" treatment." |
