Abstract/Contents: | "Plant roots require access to oxygen within the soil. Dissolved oxygen (DO) in water can be delivered to soil and used for respiratory processes. Nanobubble-oxygenated irrigation water (NOIW), containing over 15 mg L-1 DO, has been investigated for its effect on plant growth characteristics of a sand-based creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera L.) putting green. The inability of NOIW to affect root or shoot growth of creeping bentgrass may be due to the drastic decrease in DO content of NOIW after passing through an irrigation nozzle and contacting the surface of the putting green. Sub-surface irrigation in conjunction with NOIW limits DO lost from the irrigation water, by reducing the amount turbulent action to which the irrigation water is exposed. Thus, our research aims to compare the effects of sub-surface irrigation water source and nanobubble-oxygen treatment on creeping bentgrass plant health characteristics, when grown in sand-based lysimeters. Lysimeters were constructed with a sand-based rootzone conforming to United States Golf Association specifications. Plugs of creeping bentgrass were planted 1.25 cm below the surface of the lysimeters and clipped 3x wk-1 at the surface of the lysimeter. The study was a 2x2 factorial design with two water treatments (Potable or Pond) and two oxygen treatments (Nanobubble or Untreated), arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Lysimeters were irrigated 3x wk-1 using sub-surface irrigation with each of the four treatments. Digital image analysis was conducted weekly to record turf dark green color index (DGCI). Leaf clippings were collected every other week and analyzed for total nitrogen (%) and NO3- (mg L-1). Roots were analyzed for dry weight and growth characteristics. NanoPond water increased DGCI compared to all other treatments. Pond water decreased leaf total nitrogen compared to potable water. Root growth characteristics and NO3- were unaffected by any treatment." |
