Abstract/Contents:"Zoysiagrass (Zoysia spp.) is utilized as a warm-season turfgrass because of its density, visual quality, stress tolerance, and reduced input requirements (Patton et al., 2017). Being that zoysiagrass is a warm-season turfgrass, the winter dormancy period presents turfgrass managers with a unique opportunity to apply nonselective herbicides "applied prior to zoysiagrass green-up" to control a broad spectrum of winter annual weeds (Xiong et al., 2013). Although this weed control strategy is common in bermudagrass (Cynodon spp.), turfgrass managers are concerned about potential turfgrass injury when applying nonselective herbicides to zoysiagrass. The reason for observed zoysiagrass injury has not been explained as available literature only offers evidence that these herbicides do not injure dormant zoysiagrass. The objectives of this research were to 1) determine how simulated raindrop quantity affects relocation of a glyphosate + colorant solution from treated dormant zoysiagrass leaves to underlying green shoots and surrounding areas; 2) to determine persistence of radio-labeled glyphosate on dormant zoysiagrass leaves in water-extractable form; and 3) determine post-dormant zoysiagrass response to glyphosate when dormant leaves are treated and simulated rainfall or dew is used to dislodge and relocate the herbicide onto newly developed green shoots approximately 2 weeks after treatment. The results of the present study indicated that approx. 70% of applied glyphosate could be water-extracted from dormant zoysiagrass leaves after 21 days. Simulated 3 mm rain or simulated dew + wipe at 15% green canopy reduced clipping biomass and zoysiagrass green cover compared to nontreated, treated but not irrigated, and treated but irrigated before green shoot emergence. These data suggest that glyphosate applied to dormant zoysiagrass can be relocated to green shoots. Post treatment irrigation or rainfall prior to green shoot growth could prevent injury in this scenario."
