Abstract/Contents: | "Control of goosegrass and smooth crabgrass in creeping bentgrass putting greens is difficult due to a lack of selective herbicides that selectively control of these grasses. Two field studies were established in the spring of 2022 to evaluate low-dose, frequent applications of methiozolin for season-long goosegrass and smooth crabgrass control. Bi-weekly treatments included methiozolin applied at 125, 250 and 500 g ai ha-1, bensulide, and oxadiazon plus bensulide applied at typical preemergence timing (PRE), methiozolin applied at 250 and 500 g ai ha-1 delayed until close to germination (DPRE), and methiozolin applied at 500 g ai ha-1 early postemergence (EPOST). Data collected were visual weed control and turfgrass injury as percentages. To account for biweekly ratings, data were converted to area under the progress curve per day (AUPC d-1). All treatments controlled smooth crabgrass >80% throughout the season, with the exception of methiozolin applied at 125 g ai ha-1 PRE. Methiozolin applied EPOST controlled smooth crabgrass 83% and less than methiozolin applied at 250 and 500 g ha-1 PRE, 500 g ha-1 DPRE, and the two standards, but similar to methiozolin applied at 250 g ha-1 applied DPRE. Goosegrass control was highly variable regardless of treatment. The only treatments that controlled goosegrass significantly better than the nontreated were methiozolin at 500 g ai ha-1 PRE and oxadiazon plus bensulide. Turf voiding due to high levels of annual bluegrass control contributed to the variability in goosegrass control. From this study, we can conclude that when applied preemergence, methiozolin applied biweekly at 250 g ha-1, or higher, controls smooth crabgrass >80% throughout the growing season. However, it is unclear if methiozolin can effectively control goosegrass consistently. Areas of high annual bluegrass density, especially on greens collars, should be renovated before using methiozolin for season-long summer grass control." |
