Abstract/Contents: | "Improved cultural practices for dollar spot management on golf course turfgrass are increasingly important as fungicide resistance continues to increase. Preliminary research at the University of Wisconsin Madison found that increasing leaf pH through repeated applications of products such as potassium bicarbonate can provide effective dollar spot control. Two separate studies were established in Madison, WI in 2023 to further investigate the influence of leaf pH on dollar spot development. The first study compared repetitive applications of three products believed to increase leaf pH (potassium bicarbonate, potassium carbonate, ethanolamine) in addition to a commercially available potassium bicarbonate product, as well as sulfuric acid to lower leaf pH, and a potassium product that would not affect leaf pH. The second study compared potassium bicarbonate reapplied at intervals of 7, 14, and 21 days and at water volumes of 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 gallons per 1000 sq ft to identify the threshold where the treatment is able to provide adequate control, yet the total applied amount would be greatly reduced to minimize the environmental impact of repeated treatments. Dollar spot foci and turf quality were visually assessed every 14 days and leaf pH was measured using a Unisense Micrometer at regular intervals throughout the summer. Manipulation of leaf pH may provide a novel cultural strategy for effective dollar spot suppression while reducing the risk of resistance development for synthetic fungicides." |
