Abstract/Contents: | Report includes the observation that environmental impacts of golf course care have not often been given the priority they deserve. Protection of the ecosystem into which the course is constructed should be taken into consideration from the very start. Since the needs of various golf courses differ so greatly, it is limiting to draw up a plan that would apply to all, yet could prove helpful. With increasing regulations governing and restricting fertilization and application of chemicals on the golf course in general, more attention needs to be paid to the means of mechanical care that can be employed to attain the same goals as the use of chemicals sought to accomplish. Careful attention to optimum mowing heights and mowing frequencies aid not only in reduced water needs, but also in discouraging unwanted grass types from infesting, although some foreign grasses will need to be tolerated. Rather than employ incecticides, biological means of control should be explored. Fungal infestations, although inevitable, can be warded off through careful fertilization, aeration, sanding, and even through the little employed method of removing morning dew from grasses. Only the most intensively used areas of the course should be watered during dry periods, and even then care should be given that the water is optimally employed. Sanding and aerifying aid maintaining a durable surface. Removal of autumn foliage from the greens is vital, yet this same foliage can be used to aid the natural fertilization of the surrounding area. The author emphasizes that it is the responsibility of the greenkeeper to stay informed of new developments in mechanical care. |
